Not sure when I wrote last — to busy “doing” to be writing; I know,
that’s bad, I should be blogging more 🙂
Anyway, today is 10-10-10. Lots going on in the bay area including
the infamous Burning Man Decompression party.
If you want to attend something a little greener and funkier, Hayes
Valley Farm (450 Laguna St, SF) is having a Global Climate Action Work
Party, part of the 350 Gardens Challenge. Come check out an urban
garden, and hear me spinning at the latter part of the event (I’m
filling in around 6pm and my set is at 7:30, so they tell me 🙂
Details are here:
Enjoy your day!

My Role: Co-MC
SAT. May 8
World Percussion Festival in Oakland!
Details here: http://www.facebook.com/home.php?#!/event.php?eid=115603598469027&ref=ts
My Role: Taking the classes during the day, DJing the fun afterparty that night!
It has been a long time since I threw a party, so I have decided to throw a Pan-African dance party on my birthday this year! It will be at the Shashamane Bar and Grill, which is a very nice Ethiopian restaurant (so if you want to come early to eat, that would be a good option). There will be DJs playing African/Caribbean/Latin music — and I’m planning on having a Dance CONTEST with some prizes — all dance styles welcome 🙂
Date: July 4, 2009
Time: 9pm – 1:30am
Location: Shashamane Restaurant
2507 Broadway, Oakland, CA
There will not be a cover charge (although I may ask for small contributions to donate to charity). There will not be a dress code. Unfortunately, you do have to be at least 21 years old. There will be a lot of nice people with a positive fun atmosphere.
Everyone is welcome. Friends; friends of friends, etc.
P.S. Yes, I’ll put it on Facebook too 🙂
Yet another last minute announcement from me about some events this weekend. Of course, most of you on this list know about both of the Friday events as they are being very well publicized.
Benefit for Marlon Mayorga – Friday 7pm – Jelly’s Cafe
Tonight there is a benefit at Jelly’s Cafe in San Francisco for the family of Marlon Mayorga.
There will be great DJs and fun dancing, and I am thankful to Anejo Productions and Jelly’s for putting this event on. I encourage everyone to attend (again, all the details are at the link above).
Carnaval KIng & Queen Competition – Friday 7pm – Cafe Cocomo
Unfortunately for me, on the same night as Marlon’s event is the Carnaval King & Queen competition at nearby Cafe Cocomo, which I am co-MCing and co-DJing. This too, will be a fun event, and will benefit Mission Neighborhood Centers. Details are:
Special guest from Trinidad. Youthful “La Colectiva” 8 piece band playing Cuban son, cumbias and more. Dancing until 1:30 am. Age 21 with ID.
Tickets at door $20. Cash only. Lots of street parking. Doors open 7:00 pm. Get their early for Brazilian jazz by B-Trio on the patio before the competition. Contest starts promptly at 8:00 pm.Tickets, if available, will be $20 at the door. . Still time to purchase tickets for $15:
Sierra Leone Soccer Benefit – Sat. 4pm – El Rio
My friend James Mannah is from Sierra Leone and he is taking his son back home this summer. They plan to take soccer equipment for a school there when they go. So, he is having a little shindig Saturday afternoon from 4-8pm at El Rio on Mission Street. I’ll be DJing as well.
Finally, Happy Birthday Rachel 🙂
The time has finally come–I won’t elaborate here, but if you want to join in with like-minded folks who feel that the first day of Barack Obama’s presidency of these United States is something to celebrate, then please join me and my friends this Tuesday.*
We will be at the Shashamane International Bar and Grill in Oakland (at 2507 Broadway Ave.) which is Ethiopian owned and lives up to its name of being “international”. We will be there from 6pm til at least midnight, so stop in right after work, or later on if you like. The plan is for it to be a community affair and an international one at that with all kinds of people, and music and dance. There will be African and American DJs (in true Obama spirit), some drumming, and even some “bottle and spoon” (for the Trinidadians). We also may have some Brazilian musicians drop in–anything can happen!
Truly, everyone is welcome. There is no cover charge. Food and drinks will be available. If you feel to dance, dance! If you feel to chill, chill. If you feel to bring an instrument, bring it. We know Obama has his challenges cut out for him; we know he will make mistakes–but we also know he is bright, articulate, thoughtful, and with our help, yes our help, he presents the potential for a much improved future for our country, and the world.
I hope that you will join me Tuesday evening and help create good memories of “where were you” the night our African-American President took office.
* This event is FREE, and all are welcome. No dress code or other filter for keeping people out other than you will have to have ID and be over 21 as alcohol is served at the club. Sorry kids 🙁

In Peace and Hope,
P.S. This is a WOMP (word of mouth party), so there is no flyer, no trees consumed, just this email. It is up to you to spread the word, and to show up with positive energy.
