Day 57 – Saturday, December 28, 1996
Miles – 450
(by Jason Martin)
I«m not sneezing much anyway, only about 700 times a day. I know my buddy Jim is going to get tired of saying it one day, all I hear is, “bless you, bless you, bless you”.
Jim washed his bike, actually he paid a guy to wash it for him, but for 5 dollars it looks brand new! Buddy asked if I wanted mine washed, “perro, me gusta la moto mucho sucio gracious” I said. ( I like my bike dirty thanks). It would«ve been the first time since leaving LA.
Left Arica at noon, rode 720kms to beautiful Antofagasto. One strech of road (desert) was 340kms with no gas! Crossing the Atacama dessert was no picnic, fluctuating temeratures and blowing sand storms made for an exciting ride through the driest place on earth.
Dinner consisted of a 1/2 bun grease burger, some fries, and two “Paps” (the local soft drinks). Real healthy eating anyhow.
A 25 cent city-bus ride took us to “Popo«s”, the poular nightclub for “young adults” , $10 to get in, $18(US) for 3 cokes and a margarita! Jim and I stood out like turds in a punch bowl, (the average age could not have been more than 1/), but we stayed (loving it) for a couple hours dancing and having a great time.
